147 Broadway, Woodstock, New Brunswick
147 Broadway is a square yellow residence with Classical stylings
This house is recognized for its association with Gilbert Van Wart and the house at 149 Broadway, as well as for its architecture.
Gilbert Van Wart was a prominent businessman in early Woodstock. In 1857, he purchased the land on Broadway Hill from Charles Bull, son of George H. N. Bull. The land ran from Lower Main Street up the terrace to Union Street to Broadway. Originally, this house was built on Union Street, as Broadway didn't exist at the time. In 1879, Van Wart split the house in half, moving the front portion to 147 Broadway Street, where he continued to live. This house was one of the first on Broadway. The house next door at 149 Broadway was once part of this house.
Regarding its architecture, this house is a very pure example of the Classical style. It has a long ell with a steeply-pitched pointed dormer.
