Description

The Glacier Rock is two-meter tall boulder on Saunders Road, McAdam. It has a rare feature called orbicules, which are light rings of granite that stand out against the dark sedimentary body of the boulder. This gives the rock a distinctive appearance reminiscent of a leopard's spots.

Heritage Value

Glacier Rock is an unusually-patterned boulder located in McAdam Heritage Park in McAdam, NB. 2 meters in height and weighing 30 tonnes, this dark greenish-grey rock is one of many granite boulders created in the area by migrating glaciers 13,000 years ago. This particular rock stands out from the crowd for its striking pattern. Across the surface of the rock are pale granite rings known as "orbicules", which is the Latin word for circle. These light grey rings protrude from the dark sedimentary core of the boulder in a fashion reminiscent of a leopard's spots. These rare circles are the result of rocks melting in the earth's crust and then rising to the surface, where they are carried and rolled by glaciers. It is estimated this process occurred 400 million years ago.
