Heritage Value

The impressive John Johnson House at the intersection of Main Street and Queens Road in Sackville was constructed in 1899 as a home for lumber baron John Johnson and his family. The two-and-a-half storey house provides an excellent example of a late Victorian-era Queen Anne-style residence, with its steep gable roof, prominent bay windows, and two tall towers on the front façade.

John Johnson is notable for his role in the early business community of Sackville. Along with his sons, Oren, Seward, and Josiah, Johnson worked in lumbering, mainly running Johnson's Mills between Sackville and Dorchester. Johnson's business proved to be very profitable, and it contributed to the economic boom that led to the incorporation of Sackville in 1903. Several permanent buildings were constructed along the shoreline to meet the business' needs, including a bunkhouse that accommodated up to twenty men in the winter, a building that housed the portable mill, and barns for the many horses used to carry the mill's products to Grand-Anse. Outside of the lumber industry, Johnson was also involved in local politics, serving on the Westmorland County Council and the Town Council.

In the present, it is home to the Different Drummer Bed & Breakfast
