Description

The Marine Hospital is a 19th-century Georgian-style sandstone hospital. It is located on Vye Street in the former small community of Douglastown, which is now part of Miramichi.

Heritage Value

The Marine Hospital, also known as Seaman's Hospital, is recognized as the oldest remaining marine hospital in Canada. Built in 1830, the Georgian-style sandstone hospital was funded by a tax placed on the tonnage of vessels arriving in the port of Miramichi sandstone. Following its opening in 1831, the hospital spent roughly ninety years providing care for injured and sick mariners who did not have family in the area. One notable employee during this time was Dr. Thompson, who treated patients there for more than fifty years.

After the facility ceased operation in 1921, the building was purchased by St. Samuel’s Parish, which used it as a church hall until the late 1980s. At one point it was threatened with demolition but was rescued by Miramichi Heritage. In the present, the former hospital is used for tours and community events.
