Middle Island Irish Historical Park

A stone cross and an Irish flag surrounded by a clover-shaped hedge at the Middle Island Irish Historical Park

Middle Island, located on the Miramichi river, served as a permanent federal government quarantine station from 1873 to 1948 for immigrants, primarily Irish families fleeing the potato famine. Many perished on the island during this somber period.

Discover the island’s history by exploring its sandy beaches and trails with lookouts and interpretive panels. Check out the interpretation center and the beautiful Celtic cross at the park, and make sure to visit its restaurants, picnic areas, and outdoor amphitheater.
