The Connell Building is a two-storey brick commercial row building located on the corner of Main and Harvey Streets in Woodstock. Its lower level currently hosts three business: NBsushi & Noodle, Mother Nature Market, and Harlen Brews.
The Connell Building is recognized for its Italianate design, as well its association with Woodstock's business culture.
In 1877, Woodstock was afflicted by a terrible fire, destroying much of its downtown area. When reconstruction began in 1878, a series of brick Italianate commercial row buildings was erected along much of Main Street and some perpendicular streets. The building at 616-620 Main Street is a good example of this style, having completely retained its original red brick exterior. The southerly rear section of the building is attached to the northerly front section of the next 'block'.
The original tenants of this building have been lost to history, however over the years the building has hosted known several businesses, including:
- Kiss and Make Up
- Greenhouse Window
- Barb's Bake Shop
- Cash FX
- Made You Blush
- Solstice Supply and Design
One of the most prominent of the building's business was “Atherton’s Harness Shop”. Frank L. Atherton was a harness-maker, having been taught by fellow Woodstock harness-maker T. L. Estey. Opening in 1890, the business employed about seven people. Their handsewn harnesses were locally renown thanks to the exceptional quality, particularly relating to their durability. The store also carried a variety of other horse-related products as well, including horse blankets, whips, brushes, combs, stock foods, horse medicines, and oils.
A notable feature of the store was a life-size plaster horse, nicknamed "Fred", which Atherton purchased in 1896 for advertising. Fred was a popular landmark for fifty-five years before being sold to a Maine museum in 1951.
As of 2024, the building is jointly owned by NBsushi & Noodle, Mother Nature Market, and Harlen Brews.
