Description

Marine Hospital is a 19th-century Georgian-style sandstone hospital. It is located on Vye Street in the former small community of Douglastown, which is now part of Miramichi.

Heritage Value

Marine Hospital, also known as Seaman's Hospital, is recognized as the oldest remaining marine hospital in Canada. Starting in the 1830s, the hospital cared for injured and sick mariners who did not have family in the area. The hospital was funded by a tax placed on the tonnage of vessels arriving in the port of Miramichi. The facility ceased operation in 1921, and the building was then purchased by St. Samuel’s Parish, which used it as a church hall until the late 1980s. At one point it was threatened with demolition but was rescued by Miramichi Heritage. In the present, the former hospital is used for tours and community events.
