Church Decoration

Location

188 Canada Street, Saint-Quentin

Description

The Steeple Rooster is a small bronze statue in the shape of a rooster. It is perched on the cross on the
steeple of Très Saint-Sacrement church on Canada Street in Saint-Quentin.

Heritage Value

The Steeple Rooster is recognized as a symbol of the faith and perseverance of the community in Saint-Quentin. The Steeple Rooster was initially placed atop Sainte-Quentin's original church as a decoration. However, the church was destroyed in a fire on October 10th, 1944. Miraculously, the flames did not spread to the surrounding homes, and only the church was burned. To memorialize the event, the rooster and the cross were restored and placed on top of the steeple of the new Très Saint-Sacrement church, which was built between 1946 and 1947. The Steeple Rooster is regarded as a monument to the fire and as a symbol of the enduring religious belief of the people of Saint-Quentin, even in difficult times.
