Sturgeon's Store, a one-and-half storey vernacular building with two regularly spaced windows on the second floor and a large picture window next to the white front door on the first floor. A green awning hangs over the picture window and door.
Sturgeon's Store in Blackville is recognized for its association with business owner Jane MacRae. It is also a good example of the bygone trend of summer kitchens, as well as an interesting case of adaptive re-use, as it was moved in the 1940s by the next owners to the land next to the house and turned into a store.
The original purpose of the building was to be an 'outside' or backyard kitchen for Jane MacRae, whose family had lived in Blackville for many years by the time this structure was erected in the early twentieth century. During the hot summer months, food would be prepared in this backyard building rather than in the main house, so that the heat would not become unbearable.
Jane MacRae was a highly effective business owner. She and her first husband, James Bean, ran the James Bean Store next door at 161 Main Street until Bean's death in 1913. She then went on to marry her second husband, James Gerrish, in 1915, who became involved in the storefront as well. Her strong business sense gave her store a powerful influence in the local mercantile trade.
In the 1940s, the new owners moved this building from its original position behind Jane MacRae's house (the Gerrish House) to be next to the home, where it has been ever since. In the present, the building hosts Curtis Miramichi River Outfitters, which sells fishing gear and other sporting goods.
