117 Green Street, Woodstock, New Brunswick
The Sunder House is a very large, two-storey house on an elevated lot on Green Street in Woodstock. It exhibits the Neo-Classical style and prominently features a unique Tudor arch veranda.
Sunder House is recognized for its elaborate design as well as its association with the Connell and Sunder families.
The Sunder House is an especially grandiose example of a Neo-Classical house. The house features various styles, including a veranda with low Tudor arches that contrasts with Greek Revival eaves and a later-added “Queen Anne” style bay with attic dormers upstairs. These two styles were not blended, yet they fit together regardless and gave the building a unique appearance. Interestingly, the Sunder House shares a similar design to the nearby house at 149 Connell Street. Both buildings feature a French door that leads to the veranda, and it is theorized that the verandas had the same joiner. The house's surroundings are another important element in its heritage designation. Though it has shrunk since its heyday, the property retains an expansive lot covered with mature maple and elm trees.
The house was initially built for George Heber Connell, son of MLA and Postmaster of New Brunswick, the Honourable Charles Connell. In 1903, the building was sold to Lt. Col. Sunder, MD. Col. Sunder was a distinguished surgeon and had previously served as a British army officer in India, where his wife, Clara Isabel Shea Boyer, had been a missionary. The couple and their family lived in the house in the 1920s and 1930s.
