Built in 1817 for the Merritt family, Loyalists who settled in New Brunswick following the American Revolutionary War, Loyalist House is a remarkable example of early Georgian architecture. The house offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience life in Saint John during the early nineteenth century while exploring the stories of the Loyalists who helped shape the province.
One of the home’s most remarkable features is its survival of the Great Fire of 1877, which destroyed much of Saint John. Today, Loyalist House remains one of the few buildings to have endured that devastating event. Visitors can admire many original architectural features, including the elegant grand staircase and beautifully preserved interior details that have remained largely unchanged for more than two centuries.
Acquired by the New Brunswick Historical Society in 1959, Loyalist House is recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada and stands as an outstanding example of the craftsmanship and design of early Saint John.
