Carleton County Historical Society — Founders Award

The Carleton County Historical Society has been consistently furthering the mission of heritage preservation in New Brunswick for over 60 years. The Society first incorporated in 1960, and its first president, Ken Holmer, was an original Board Member of AMNB in 1975. Since then, the Society has done incredible work restoring the Old Carleton County Courthouse, which had been used as a barn for 50 years at the time it was to be restored. It involved a lot of creative fundraising, commitment to the cause, high-quality restoration work, and community engagement. This work inspired early members of the Society, and the high standards of the group insured a quality restoration that inspired the acquisition and restoration of other properties, including Cluff House, Sharp House, Connell House, and Wright House, all in Woodstock. The Society owns and operates Connell House and the Courthouse to this day, and both are beautifully maintained. For their consistent creativity, determination, and success in heritage conservation community, AHNB is pleased to award the Carleton County Historical Society with the Founders Award.

Dr. Koral LaVorgna – Quarter Century Award

Koral LaVorgna has been volunteering in the Fredericton heritage sector for almost 30 years. She has always been extremely dedicated and thorough. Her first project with the Fredericton Region Museum, way back in 1995, was a middle school exhibit that focused on the “History of Human Rights”, where she measured the students’ learning by giving them questionnaires before and after they participated. She has remained involved with the York-Sunbury Historical Society Ltd. since, serving on the Exhibits, Collections, and Program Committees. Koral is also a familiar face at the Provincial Archives, where she has been known to interrupt her own important research to help others. She has been involved with the City of Fredericton over the years as well, having worked for them several times as a contract Research and Report Officer, providing backgrounds and recommendations for heritage building designations. She was also a “Step-On Guide” for the City’s Heritage and Economic Bus Tours. Over the years she has worked with professional heritage research firms that work with First Nations, and she was once even the Executive Director of AHNB. For her many years of dedicated service to the community and the insightful knowledge she shares openly and willingly, we are pleased to award Dr. Koral LaVorgna with the Quarter Century Award.
