Built for the War of 1812, this tough little fort is a classic example of a Martello tower – a small circular fort first built for defensive purposes in the south of England during the Napoleonic Wars. A national historic site, Carleton Martello tower is located in the historic west side community of Carleton, and features a restored gunpowder magazine and soldiers’ barracks. A concrete fire command post was later added during the Second World War. Those who climb to the top of the hill will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the City, the Bay, and Partridge Island.
While the historic tower is currently undergoing restoration work and is temporarily inaccessible, visitors are still welcome to enjoy the onsite visitor centre with free admission throughout the summer season.
