Built for the War of 1812, this tough little fort is a classic example of a Martello tower – a small circular fort first built for defensive purposes in the south of England during the Napoleonic Wars. A national historic site, Carleton Martello tower is located in the historic west side community of Carleton, and features a restored gunpowder magazine and soldiers’ barracks. A concrete fire command post was later added during the Second World War. Those who climb to the top of the hill will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the City, the Bay, and Partridge Island.
Carleton Martello Tower is currently undergoing significant restoration. Although visitors will not be able to enter the Tower at this time, there is much to explore at the site’s Visitor Centre! Here, a short film and award-winning exhibit reveals its rich history. Everyone is invited to come explore!
In 2025, the visitor centre will be open from June 9 to October 12, from 10am to 530pm. The site is closed to the public on Thursdays and Fridays.
