The Endangered Places List is an initiative of AHNB’s that consists of a nomination-based program where anyone who feels compelled to call attention to at-risk heritage places in their part of the province may do so. Oftentimes deteriorating sites go unnoticed for too long and we suffer the loss of some of our most unique built heritage structures. For this reason, we have decided to create this program to give the public the opportunity to nominate their decaying local heritage sites for our annual Endangered Places List. The List will draw media attention, inform local communities of their at-risk sites, attract potential heritage-conscious buyers, and hopefully aid in securing provincial funding for sites that really need it.
The Endangered Places List will be published annually in May, around the Victoria Day weekend. It will include 5 sites per year, and nominations can be made at any time. Heritage sites that are nominated for the List do not need to be formally recognized to be included. The nominator of each site that ends up on the List is responsible for providing updates at the 6 and 12-month mark after the List has been published. These updates should be made by filling out and submitting the Report Card, which can be accessed here.
